Fit Kitchen: The Legion

I don’t get quite as many comments as Youtubers do it seems, but I did get a few comments on Twitter! Because of that, we’re going to look at the Legion today as well as one surprise extra fit for CCP Aurora of all people ;D It’s a fun little boat and it doesn’t get the love it deserves. Usually, the Legion is overshadowed by the long webs of a Loki, let down by the dual-weapon system of drones+missiles, or out-neuted by a Bhaalgorn. It still brings a lot to the table, though, and I’ve got quite a few interesting fits to show off today.

As always, we can start with the ship bonuses so that we know what to work towards. Being a T3, there is way too much information for me to put into columns without breaking formatting hard. Instead, here’s a rough breakdown of what your three options are for each substem slot:

Base Ship Bonuses

Amarr Strategic Cruiser bonuses (per skill level):
5% reduction in module damage from overheating
10% bonus to nanite repair paste repair speed

Role Bonus:
99% reduction in Scan Probe Launcher CPU requirements
Rigs may be removed from this ship without being destroyed
On ship destruction, the pilot will lose one random subsystem skill level

(Pick one of each from the following)

Core Subsystem

  • Extra capacitor, neut resistance, and lots of powergrid.
  • Fast locking, longer targeting, and better sensor strength.
  • Bonuses to neut and nos drain amount, better neut and nos overheating.

Defensive Subsystem

  • A lot more armour HP, better overheat of active hardeners
  • Better armour reps, better overheating of armour reps
  • Can fit a cloak, smaller bonuses to armour repping.

Offensive Subsystem

  • Lots of missiles, lots of drones, with drone damage and HP.
  • Medium energy turret range, damage, and activation cost.
  • Can fit command bursts and remote armour reps like an Oneiros but with overheating bonuses.

Propulsion Subsystem

  • Agility and base velocity bonuses.
  • Afterburner velocity bonus and MWD sig reduction, but no extra agility.
  • Much faster warping and immune to warp disruption bubbles.

So you can see that there are plenty of options when it comes to designing a fit, and that is part of why I’ve not made an article on it for so long. If you want an instalock beam ship then you can do it. If you want a Black Ops hunter with links for your Panthers and Redeemers then you can do that too. Most people just throw damage, a cloak, and sometimes neuts onto this ship and call it a day, relying on bling to solve every problem. If you’re a long time reader then you know that isn’t how I do things. Most of the fits below come in at around 400m ISK rather than the laughable 1.5b+ ISK T3C’s that we kill daily. They perform just as well.

Parasitic Legion, Utilising Bonuses

As I’ve already discussed, the neuting setup for a Legion is a pretty good one. A single T2 medium neut from a legion eats up 22.5GJ/s with heat up to 29GJ/s! To put that into perspective, a T2 heavy neut from a battleship is 25GJ/s. You can certainly set this up for a full heavy armour neut Legion and it’s bloody effective. You aren’t here for fleet fits, though, so check out the first one below instead.

There are two variants, actually, both based on the same concept. I like to think of the first buffer one as a cheap Stratios killer. For roughly the same ISK as a Stratios, you can cloak, neut much harder, have more buffer, and hit much harder with drones and HAMs. 683 DPS hot isn’t amazing but combined with 58 GJ/s of neuts it has potential to shut down and out-brawl many of the weird active rep fits you see around wormhole space these days. I recommend flying this with a Talisman set. The low grades cost about 220m ISK and the latter only 427m. This allows you to push that neuting up to 80GJ/s! That’s enough to zap a battery Deimos flat in 50 seconds.

The second fit below is an armour rep version. It uses an MWD instead and is not cloaky. My thoughts there are that if you can cloak, you can use your better positioning to get the brawl rather than having to burn for it. Of course, the benefit to being non-cloaky is that you can use that lovely defensive subsystem and get a really nice tank without spending beyond T2. To do that I’ve also leveraged the nos bonus purely to keep your own tank alive. I don’t advise blinging the reps here at all. It’s a fool’s goal and it always ends with a dead T3C when someone brings a bit of alpha damage.

Speedy Legions, 50MN and 100MN

So perhaps you aren’t so big of a brawling fan. The excitement of being pounded by a Hyperion is just too much for you. Fortunately, the Legion can kite decently well, too. It isn’t the fastest or most agile ship out there, but it certainly has all the right stats to make longer-range fits worth flying.

Eat your heart out, Zealot

The first one, once again, leans on the theme of using a Covert Ops Cloak. It’s essentially a tankier and higher damage Omen Navy Issue, or it’s a faster and better nano Zealot. In a Conflag + Pulse Laser setup, it pushes 811 DPS hot, though I’d be more inclined to make use of ~42km Scorch. With Beams, it instead hits to 30km with 708 DPS and even as far as 100km in a pinch with Aurora. With these kind of stats, it’s very tempting to drop the point for a tracking computer to make the most use of this as long range damage and anti-tackle.

My second speedy fit is a 100MN variant and I have to say that it’s one of my favourite overpropped ships next to the Vedmak and the Stabber Fleet Issue. That’s because the Legion manages to be generally good in every area that a 100MN ship needs. It has a 17.6s align, heats up to 2.86km/s, does 700 DPS cold, and tanks a good amount. The fact that it uses RLMLs and drones is a bonus in helping get rid of tackle. The only things to be aware of here are your somewhat limited time on-grid with the ancil, and the limitations of a defensive neut against really hard tackle. One final point about this fit is that it achieves a 4 second warp with a 2% implant. Now that’s slippery.

Here’s cloaky HAM version (that struggles on cap) too.

Rabisu on a Budget, The Rep Legion

I was a couple of matches away from winning one of these. Top 16 ATXIV captain πŸ˜‰

In case anyone is new to the game or just didn’t know, there are actually cloaky logistics ships in EVE online, and I’m not talking about T3Cs. The Rabisu and Etana are the armour and shield versions respectively. Only 50 of each were ever seeded, so they’re pretty damn rare. The fact that a Tech 3 Cruiser such as the Legion can perform that same role nowadays is insane, especially when you can do it for as cheap as 470m ISK.

You can run a similar fit to the one below in a non-cloaky format by utilising the Augmented Plating subsystem and going hard on the bling. I don’t see the point for most gangs, though. It allows you to hide strong logi within your DPS fleet, but the new powergrid changes make it expensive. To tank well, you need to spend on good resist mods. To make it worth the money, you then need to spend a lot more on blingy medium remote reps. Honestly, just use an Oneiros, Zarm, extra guardian, or a… rep Maller.

So what makes this fit good? Well, the fact that it has a really specific use-case in a Black Ops fleet. I went with the cap booster setup since it saves powergrid and allows us to pick up the Dissolution Sequencer subsystem instead, reaching almost instalock. Not as versatile as a battery rep Legion, but it doesn’t need to be on grid for nearly as long. We’re also playing into that theme by frontloading reps into the heated ancil rapper. If you just need to buy the time to finish a gank then that’s all you need. If not, it still performs almost as well as the medium compacts.

…And Everything Else

You might have thought that I would stop after 43 fits. Nah. If I did that then I wouldn’t have tried fun things such as the.. shield Legion, or a 500MN bump fit. Neither of these are a good idea. You could also consider a polarised HAM legion for blops, but the Loki still does it so much better. Besides, that’s only so you can look pretty at the top of the killmail above all the battleships

UPDATE: I said shield Legions are bad and I have received no end of messages from people upset about this. Fine, I relent. In an environment where you are putting a Legion in a shield gang it can be used in the same way as a shield Oracle. The damage is very respectable at long ranges, especially with Locus rigs. Here’s an example cheap fit, although you’re going to want to put a restrained MWD on and consider what you are tracking/how close it might get. Take some Standard Drop and consider a tracking enhancer πŸ™‚

The best thing I can suggest if you want another use for the Legion is to go for a PvE fit. And I’m only saying that because everyone has suggested it to me and noone can agree on a good way to do it. See, the problem is that you either tank a hell of a lot, or you rely on sig tanking. I’m going to provide a sig tanking version below which I know works in C3 wormhole sites. For that reason, you can probably use it in Level 4 missions, C2 sites etc.

This fit also shows why I’m so reluctant to recommend this sort of thing to people who do want a ship for wormhole PvE. It absolutely 100% relies on the sig tank to not die. The all-5 tank on paper is about 381 EHP/s, nowhere near enough to tank. It just does, though. Keep your transversal up and keep moving or you will die. I think the short clip below does it justice. Watch what happens when I stop, and then when I start moving again.

Honestly, I have no idea why this is corrupted now. It’s 2021 and this just happened. Oh well!

And here’s your Griffin Navy Issue fit, CCP Aurora. Everyone quick! Shoot the Griffin! Wait, why is it tanking all of us? Is this bait?

And for yet another bonus, this is how I fit a fleet Legion since you made it all the way to the end.

You should do the other T3C’s this is a great article! Really nice to see cheaper options than the 1-2bil Legions that are all over the place.

    • Thanks πŸ™‚

And that’s precisely my point with this piece. I always primary T3Cs because they’re easy to kill and often hilariously expensive for no reason at all.

  2. What happens when you’re webbed with the C3 sig tank fit?

    • It still works, you just take more damage. The threshold for actually mitigating much of the damage is surprisingly low and you can always overheat your AB. That said, I wouldn’t necessarily trust that and webs should become your primary if possible. Just don’t push the wave to do that.

Love all your Kitchen Fit articles! Just a heads up: the C3 video appears to have pulled an EVE local and bugged out. :/

    • Thanks πŸ™‚

If you mean the little clip at the bottom of this article, it seems to be loading fine for me. I’ve seen that some issues can occur with it on iPads and other mobile devices since it’s just a direct mp4 embed.

    • Thanks, and true enough, but I would highly recommend you use Pyfa instead

  4. I’m having some trouble with the C3 Fit against Frigates (the webbing ones). Would it be an option to switch out the tracking computer for a web?

    • You can do that for sure. In my testing I didn’t have much trouble if I burned away from them, killed them first, and loaded for tracking. A web would be a perfectly valid option, though πŸ™‚

  5. Libluini Libluini

Always nice to see what other people are doing with the Legion. Nowadays I’m more into using the Proteus and the Loki, but years back I had a lot of fun doing the Gallente Epic Arc with a dual rep HAM-Legion.

Though I’m not sure I ever actually needed the second armor rep, most of the battleships never managed to hit me.

  6. Dogs Dogs

Why the small cap boosters? Is that supposed to be a MEDIUM cap booster II? I know that a medium fits on the 100mn Rapid Light fit

    • Because a small cap booster fits and gives a huge amount of cap. There’s no need to gimp your fit for extra capacitor when its unnecessary for what you want to do.

  7. Rulqu Rulqu

Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane is nowdays named Multispectrum Energized Membrane

    • Indeed it is. It’s just many many many hours of effort to update the old names

      • Rulqu Rulqu

And also there’s no Medium Anti-Thermal Pump II anymore. I guess it’s meant to be Medium Thermal Armor Reinforcer II? πŸ˜€ (I’m sorry)

        • Yes, you can just paste these fits into Pyfa instead and it should parse them all for you

Hey Ashy, love your blog and really hope that you’re still enjoying Eve despite the tone in your last articles. This blog helped me a lot when I started 6 months ago so thank you for your work.
While going through this article I picked up on a note where you mention that your favorite overpropped ships are the vedmak and the SFI. Now everyone knows the 100mn vedmak but I had never heard of overpropped SFI and I love this ship. Would you mind sharing some of the fits for a 100mn SFI if you recall what they were (or even just the core ideas so I can pyfa my way)?

    Thanks again

    • So since posting that I have found that the Scythe FI performs the job much better. And I am talking about a 500MN not a 100MN for it!
The fit is below. It is used for bumping things around grid in a fight or bumping caps off fortizars. In many ways this can be even better than a booshing ship because few people notice it. It also comes with combat probes, a cloak, scram and point, and even a tractor beam for grabbing loot quickly.
